GreatSchools used to be primarily test score based, but it also includes test score improvements(in general, academic and by ethnic/economic groups). For high schools, I believe it considers college “readiness” as well. It’s ranking number is also based on the state and Above average is 8-10, average is 4-7 and below average is 1-3: https://www.greatschools.org/gk/ratings/
Thank you! That's definitely helpful!

Do you have any personal experience with these schools?

No not directly, but there are other posters that have in terms of attending said schools or living in the area. Hopefully they will chime in...

Also, this source is good for district boundaries(an example): Pine Bush Central School District - USA.comâ„¢

You can look at relatively recent information within those boundaries and do the same for other districts within both counties.

Sorry to bring this back from the dead.

In Orange County (specifically, Washingtonville), we noticed that there were significant fluctuations in property taxes from year-to-year. It looks like much of the difference comes from the county assessment, not the school taxes. We've seen this on 3 different houses.

Can anyone shed light on what's going on, if there is a way to get the taxes more consistent, etc.?

Here's an example.

I wonder if the assessment was challenged for any of the homes. Is that source from the county website or from a realty site?

That's straight from the county site.

Yeah, that is a strange county tax history given the differences through that timeframe, unless it was a typo.

Do you see a more consistent pattern for other homes in that neighborhood?
