Hello, All.

I have lived all over the US and have traveled a great deal. I love NY State. Have always wanted to live there, near to the City but in a smaller community where cost of living may be better and there is not as much congestion.

Well, I may be offered a good job in the town of Catskill shortly. I have done a good deal of research about the region, but I would like to get some advice/thoughts from people who currently live in-state (I'm living in Virginia at the moment) regarding taxes.

My problem is, I have two children and a good job, but my wife can't work due to health issues. I have a decent salary, but we barely get by. I have $$$ going into retirement, but outside of that we live paycheck to paycheck.

The job I would be moving into in Catskill wouldn't really net me any more income. I am eager to move because I like the small town life and that particular area, (and I am also sorely dissatisfied with my current gig) but I'm afraid I'd get killed in taxes.

I'm anxious to move (should I actually get the job offer) but I simply can't do it unless I make out financially at least as well as I do currently.

Do people consider NY State taxes terribly high? I've been looking at some comparison charts by state and it seems high, but there seems to be a trade-off in other areas as well.

???

Don't know what to do...

PS-- if anyone has any thoughts about the town of Catskill or the surrounding region, please feel free to talk it up.

Thanks.

You might check on one of the cost-of-living calculators that are online. We bought retirement house in NY state. Car insurance, food, expenses, etc. are approximately 25% cheaper than NJ.

Long Island taxes are very high, I am not sure of upstate. I was paying 8,000.00 for a quarter acre of property on LI in a crappy area.

Taxes are very high in Ulster County; there is a grass-roots effort to change things, but unless the entire state unites, it's just a hot air balloon being floated.
