Low-income New Yorkers will now have guaranteed access to high speed internet for $15 a month after Governor Andrew Cuomo signed a new bill into law in Buffalo on Friday, April 16.

Devoid of press but surrounded by a group of supporters — including Dr. Eric Schmidt, the former CEO of Google, Byron Brown, the mayor of Buffalo, and Assembly Majority Leader Crystal Peoples-Stokes — Cuomo explained the new law is designed to address a major function of the inequities laid bare by the COVID-19 crisis.

“The key to success is always the same – it’s access,” the governor said. “Access today is not a highway system, it’s not a phone call, it’s the internet system and the broadband system.”

The law will require internet providers to offer all New Yorkers who qualify for other government assistance programs, including SNAP and Medicaid, high speed internet access for $15 a month.

Government forcing business in this way is just not cool.
Really. What’s next?
If I own a construction company or an auto body shop or whatever, am I gonna hafta take a hit to the wallet for people that can’t afford to renovate their house or paint their car?

New York long has been a welfare state, but under Il Duce Cuomo and far left liberal progressive democrats it increasingly one driven by politics of the poor and busted. This place will be Detroit in several more years.

Grab the wife and kids and get out while you can. Otherwise it's just BOHICA as state and local governments pick your pockets with one hand, then put the squeeze on companies and businesses with the other.

That pretty well describes the situation. And if this BS continues, pretty soon we'll ALL be looking to sign up for the $15 internet, because we'll ALL be broke. I can't help but think back to my much younger days, when I'd hear my older relatives talk about how they got by during the days after the Great Depression and WWII. There was no welfare, back then, you simply got off your azz and hustled a buck, wherever you could. In that generation, if you looked for welfare, you were labeled a "loser", and were actually embarrassed about it.

I don’t see speeds mentioned. If it’s 10 down/2 up that’s fast enough for schoolwork or a zoom call but won’t be abused by online gaming or torrent downloads.

That’s about the right level of service for $15 anyway. They should make that tier available to everyone and I bet a bunch of people would sign up for it even as a backup to their primary link if they WFH.

But if something like 100 or 200 is the required download speed then yes, it’s socialism. Get off your diff and work for it.

What this means is that those of us who pay our bills will now have to pay MORE for internet access.

BTW, I distinctly remember hillary clinton promising to "criss-cross NYS with high speed internet" when she was senator. ---Just politicians with more lies

Ah yes, so horrible that people who don't have a ton of money can access the internet freely and cheaply. So terrible that they can schedule vaccine appointments, find jobs, do schoolwork remotely. Just... truly unfortunate.

/s

Seriously, in this era of working from home and schooling from home, this is a good thing. Internet should be available to all, regardless of income.

Again though it depends on speed.

If the poor get gigabit for $15 a month as Cuomo doesn’t want any stigma while everyone else pays $100+ that’s not right.

Having a reliable low tier suitable for all the things you mention is different.

I highly doubt they'll be getting top-tier, high-speed internet at $15 a month. Even if Cuomo wanted them to, I don't think the state senate/house would approve that.
