So what? Why shouldn't transgender people have the right to change their driver's licenses and birth certificates to reflect their changed sexual identity?
I'm sick of these crusades by vile bigots against people who've done nothing them except exist. We've seen these crusades based on religion, ethnicity and race for centuries. The bigots have lost their culture war against gays and lesbians, so now they've set their hateful sights on transgender people.
Transgender people have a hard enough lot in life from the get-go. Leave them alone to live their lives the way they wish. They aren't threatening anybody because of their sexual identity.
Agreed. They've got a right to be acknowleged as the gender they are and this will help that.

Except the gender activists have been beating the "gender and sex are not the same, gender is just a social construct" drum incessantly until about 43 seconds ago. But suddenly gender and sex are not only inextricably linked again, but now BOTH are malleable.
So which is it -- is gender a social construct untethered from immutable biological sex, or are they one in the same and both self-selected? Because you can't run both programs at the same time.
The fact these rules change every week with no explanation is yet another reason even erstwhile LBGT+ allies have grown tired of this nonsense.
Who the hell cares what some intellectual writes in some obscure article or book ... except right wing talking heads looking to boost their ratings or clicks by inventing reasons to justify their followers' hateful attitudes towards "the enemy"?
This isn't an "obscure article or book," it's official government policy. Do you care to offer a substantive reply or is lazy, reductive labels all you have?

Gender is a social construct. Sex as a biological thing is equally complicated, but the important thing here is gender. Which is the thing on driver's licenses. And people should be able to identify as the gender they (redundant, I know) identify as
The solution to this issue is obvious to me, but no one ever compromises so its one big endless argument. The human race has had a long standing objection to homosexuality/LGBT, with limited exceptions, because up until very recently in time, a particular society/tribe/nation/village needed to have all of its adults contributing to the production of the next generation of citizens and the performance of duties specific to each gender. Its survival depended on it. With short life spans, and high infant mortality rates, adult males and females needed to be producing children. The woman then needed to be raising the children, while the men needed to be fighting/hunting/farming/working. To be gay or trans meant you were not pulling your weight. You were not helpful.
It has only been very very very recently in human history that this has changed. Really just a few generations ago. We no longer need Rachael Maddow to pump out and raise kids. She can be a lesbian and tv talking head. We will have enough soldiers to defeat the Chinese either way. We will have enough labor, enough food, enough of everything else.
Therefore, I have zero problem with Z or X or whatever on a driver's license, and acknowledging a man as a woman and vice-versa. But none of this changes the simple fact that there are men and there are woman, and in the very few areas of society where this matters, such needs to be acknowledged and enforced. As far as I can tell, this is limited to sports and maybe some aspects of the military. Males should not be participating in female sports, for obvious reasons. If we acted as adults in this country, we would understand that if a man wants to be a woman we should let them be, and acknowledge it in all ways possible. But in very limited areas where it makes a real difference (like in competitive sports) then biological men should be separate from biological women. But of course no one is an adult, and everyone wants to have their cake and eat it too, while demonizing the other side.

Sex as a "biological thing" isn't complicated at all -- we've been a dimorphic species for hundreds of thousands of years -- or roughly half a billion years if you want to trace our lineage back to its origins. That didn't suddenly change or become more complicated 10 years ago. And no, "gender" is NOT the thing on drivers' licenses or birth certificates -- sex is, and sex is an immutable biological attribute.
