DMV return plates (New York, York: vehicle registration, car insurance, car)

Guys - it's confusing but return of plates isn't listed in any location on the reservation system. Do all locations take the plates back for a car I just sold? I would like to go to DMV express at 145 W 30th St New York, NY 10001

Print out return for , put plates in envelope along with form and mail them in.

Call me strange you but I don’t want to pay for shipping if I can just go to a DMV near my office

At the entrance, you can find a big white envelope, complete the outside of it, put the plate inside the envelope, then insert it in the dropbox. Receipt to cancel the insurance policy will be mailed.

Just curious do I have to wait for the receipt to cancel insurance or can I cancel my insurance tomorrow itself right after I drop off the plates

I’ve cancelled the insurance before returning plates.
You might get an auto generated threatening letter from DMV that they will have you dragged and quartered but just ignore it. The insurance companies have to notify DMV that the policy has been cancelled so they just automatically spurt out the letter if the procedure hasn’t been done all at once.

From my experience the auto insurance will ask for proof (such a letter or receipt from the DMV) in order cancel your car insurance in NY.

The only way from my experience for them to do so without proof is to not pay insurance premium and then the DMV will send you a threatening letter to cancel your vehicle registration due to lack of insurance.
