I am looking for input/opinions on Orange County, NY. My husband and I are looking to relocate off of Long Island w/ our children further north to be closer to other family members. We are looking for the best possible school disctricts (already started researching on greatschools.net) and with a decent commute on Metro North to NYC..right now my husband has a 2 hour commute from Eastern LI. Any information/advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

Hi there,

I've been living in Orange County for two years now. I'm not horribly impressed with the area, though. It's over-crowded and I haven't heard anything great about school districts. I mostly stayed in the area because I went to college here, so it was easier for me to get a job, but I'll be leaving this spring for a bigger city.

However, if you're sure you want to move here, I would suggest Middletown/Goshen area. Middletown has a metro-north train station that goes into Penn Station. Also, Middletown is where most of the shopping, etc. is.

I wish you the best of luck.

Just dont get in Middletown school district, go with Pine Bush schools instead! Outskirts of middletown like town of Walkill also known as Scotchtown.

Thanks...I did hear that Washingtonville Central School Districts are pretty good as well? Any thoughts? I think we are just looking for the best possible location north of Westchester/Rockland Counties where my husband would still be able to commute to NYC....keep those opinions coming along...

Washingtonville? Not really. If you want good schools, go to Goshen (taxes will be high). If shopping is a concern, stick with Scotchtown area with PB schools as mentioned above.

I have heard washingtonville schools are so so. We are focusing our efforts on Monroe-Woodbury schools.

We belong to the Washingtonville school district, and are happy with our elementary school. Good academics that are getting better every year, very friendly environment. Nothing extraordinary, but good for now. Middle school is also decent, but we are not up to this point yet. Check the school digger web site, and you will see the ranking. Monroe-Woodbury schools are better (not all of them, though), but the school taxes are higher. The best school district IMHO is Warwick Valley, but we didn't find the area commutable to the city. Goshen school district is as good as Washingtonville but taxes are higher, and it's further away from the city.
Settlepa, I think we've been through this discussion before: no matter how good the school district is, there will always be a troublemaker. When we where house hunting our main concerns where the academics, school taxes and commutable distance to NYC, and Washingtonville seemed to be the best choice. I believe it still is.

Thanks LSLE...you are right each area will have its pros and cons...and I guess you have to do what is best for you as well. We too need to have a decent commute to NYC..but schools are important.

engsmom... If you need only elementary school and the Middle school is at least 3 years away, then yes, Washingtonville is a good choice (Little Brittain is the best), otherwise look up Warwick or Monroe. I am well aware that I will never be completely satisfied with the academics, so why paying high school taxes and commute extra hour if I can either pay for additional tutoring or tutor him myself (luckily, I can do that)? Check the school digger web-site, you will get a better picture.
Good luck in your house hunting.
