I agree its dry, dull and boring and doesn't translate well to the modern world. But is the twice a year attendance for the High Holy Days any different from the Christian who only attends church twice a year for Christmas & Easter?

I'll take a 1 hour or so Christmas or Easter Mass to the 4-9 hour high holidays any day. When my mother passed, we couldn't even get a minion (10 males) for her daily services.

Same club as you so no translation needed, I also did Midnight Mass with my friends growing up way more fun than a Saturday Morning observance or the High Holy Days. Sitting on a metal folding chair for hours not understanding any of it, no thanks. For my dad passing I went to the Synagogue for 3 days to say the kaddish, once I went home there was nothing. Same when mom passed, flew up on Monday, laid her to rest Tuesday flew home that evening and then my wife had surgery on Wednesday. No time to mourn in the traditional sense.
