Looking for info on Rome, NY (New York, Syracuse: apartments, for rent, school districts)

My husband is looking at a job there and I am wondering what the area is like. We have never been to that area, so we know nothing about it. We have 2 young kids in elem. school so schools are important as well as housing/rent prices and safety. Any info would be great!

Rome is alright. It is a city of about 34,000 and is about 15 minutes from Utica and maybe 35-40 minutes from Syracuse. Schools there are OK, but there are other school districts close by that area good like Whitesboro, Clinton, New Hartford, Sherrill(V-V-S) and Oriskany. It's a generally safe city too.
