Alright, so here's the situation. My name is Matthew, and I'm currently living down the street from my parents with my wife and 2 year old in a 3 bed/2 bath home in Darien, CT. I graduated from NYU Business 2 years ago and have been rather successfully day-trading for the past 2 years. Just recently I signed a contract with Goldman Sachs in NYC. From the 7 trips there I've taken there so far, I average about a 2 hour commute each way. I start full time in November and desparately need to find a house close to the city.
Here's where I've had little success. I'm trying to be as open to suggestion as possible, but, for lack of a better word, I'm quite picky. I'm looking for a sub-40 minute commute to the city. I could never live in the city being used to the suburban life I grew up in, and absolutely hating my downtime in the dorm at NYU.
I would like 5 bed/3+ baths with a very large yard. I'm interested in 2+ acres. I'm looking for good access to top private schools for my 2 year old and the 2nd youngster on the way. I am particularly interested in very affluent communities as I'm an avid golfer/boater who would really enjoy neighbors with similar interests. I really don't want to come off as snobbish, but in all honesty, house prices are no object. If I had to set some sort of cap, it would be irrelevant anyways, but we're able to afford the $6 million range. I'm literally begging you to help me find this community. Also, if anyone who comes across this knows realtors who specialize in this sort of real estate, I would be very much appreciative of information on how I can contact them.
I'm partial to NY, such as Long Island, but I will gladly take advice for areas of NJ that fit my description. Thanks to everyone so much in advance.
Two acres that close to NYC . . . good luck! Is it possible? If you find that, let us know. I've never heard of such a thing.
That said, I know about three realtors . . . not sure their specialities. But, they are NY based and probably handle Long Island and Westchester County.
Private message me here with a contact e-mail for you. I will write back with names and numbers.
Good luck with your search. I lived in Darien for 10 years and loved it. A little off topic, but my sister and her husband are looking for a house in Darien. Is the one you are in on the market? My sister is a sahm and they can go up to 700k. I also know a great realtor who could help you, who specializes in Greenwich (we're both grads of GHS).
Thanks and best of luck with your search.
Joanne
Bronxville? Scarsdale? although I would say Bronxville would fit your personality.
For the shortest commute Westchester might not be it. I certainly would check out towns in New Jersey as they have the shortest commute to Wall Street.
I do not particularly see this is as being a problem, because although you might be picky, your needs are nothing money cannot solve.
Thanks so much for all the good info so far. Just as an update, my wife and I looked at some properties on the RE/MAX website this afternoon and fell in love with one in Scarsdale, NY.
We didn't see anything particular in Bronxville, but in general there were much fewer properties for sale. As for brahmos, I'm asking why Bronxville would more fit my personality, and what does it have that Scarsdale doesn't? Thank you for those two names as well. I had heard of Scarsdale but never gave it a second thought until you mentioned it.
As for the home I'm currently living in, my family has already invited a relative to live in.
Finally, brahmos, you mentioned New Jersey as having the shortest commutes, are there any towns you know of that I might want to investigate? Thanks again everyone for you help thusfar.
If you can stand the hills Scarsdale would work or maybe Rye would be for you. Money had better be no object if you become set on Rye though. The express train is approximately 30 minutes from Scarsdale, the community is upscale, there are many golf courses and country clubs. Rye is something else. I'm not sure six million would get you on the water, but you could be close.
I checked out some homes in Rye, NY, and while they were quite beautiful, I cannot see any clear advantages over Scarsdale. In researching the town, I also came across a number of sources claiming there to be a rather large gay community in Rye. Can anyone verify or deny these claims?
The only advantage of Rye over Scarsdale is that it is right on the water - if it is important to you. Other Westchester towns you might also look into are Larchmont and Mamaroneck. And of course Scarsdale - it is very upscale, very convenient commute to the city, and extremely family-oriented.
I can recommend an exellent realtor - pm me with your email address.
I say Bronxville because it is a shorter commute. I also think Scarsdale, while definetly affluent and nice but if I think the 'boating and golfing' type wealthy I think Bronxville.
Scarsdale definetly has those qualities too... but I guess the only thing overall that Bronxville might have is the shorter commute. Is Darien really that long a commute? I thought it was pretty close.
I do not know much about New Jersey, but I imagine any town directly opposite the river are wealthy.
Also, why bother with a private school? In the towns you plan on living in, the public schools might as well be private schools. The parking lots look like Mercedes dealerships.
Also let me throw out there Hastings, or Irvington on the West side of Westchester county.
