I've heard and read about nissan CVT transmissions being problematic. i've narrowed down my SUV purchase for end of this year to a new highlander and new pathfinder. i see pathfinders sell for 3k below invoice while highlanders are going for right around invoice. this would be a great value....

can anyone share their insights and experience (good or bath) for the current model pathfinder?

Not sure about the pathfinder but if Nissan uses the same exact CVT in the Pathfinder that they do in the Rogue and Altima I'd stay away from it. I'm currently leasing a 2012 Rogue and the tranny experience is awful. At 38k miles the transmission developed that notorious whine that usually happens prior to cvt tranny failure. I'm not even bringing it in to get serviced or looked at. My lease is up in a few months. I'm going to drive that thing right to the dealer and drop it off as is with the whine and all and Let them deal with it.

Until Nissan fixes their CVT's, I would go with the Highlander.

It's a shame what they did to the Pathfinder.

I wouldn't be too surprised if they decided to "revamp" the Xterra on a unibody platform with a CVT as the only transmission choice.

Highlander is much nicer than the Pathfinder regardless. I even passed on Infiniti due to the CVT controversy.

Of those two, certainly the Highlander is the better choice, but I wouldn't get the 4cyl version.

I recommend looking at the GMC Acadia too, very roomy with a smooth and powerful engine.

I know what you are thinking ($3K), but don't do it. On top of the CVT (which could cost well over $4500 out of warranty), the HL is a better car and would def have better resale in case your needs/mind changed.

The Highlander is the only consideration between the two. What Nissan did to the Pathfinder was a large change from what the vehicle had been previously. It would be akin to Ford having dropped the Explorer as an SUV and naming the Flex the Explorer. Nissan's CVTs are problematic, but they are terrible to drive, as I know that I am not the only one who has had frustration with the performance. Thankfully, I do not own the Nissans I have driven, as I have had several as rentals, but I could not live with that transmission on a daily basis.
