Here is a variation on the OP, as performed by my idiot brother-in-law. Here's how the phone conversation goes:
"Hey. I'm coming to town this weekend."
"Great. What time will you be here?"
"I don't know yet."
"Well, will it be evening?"
"Not sure."
"Well, we'll be making dinner. Should we set an extra plate?"
"Maybe."
"Are you staying with us?"
"I don't know yet. Really depends on what my friend Ben wants to do."
This goes on for five minutes while he gives noncommittal replies. So what has actually happened during the conversation is the following:
1) The idiot brother-in-law has made us scrap our Friday night plans on the off chance that he might show up.
2) The idiot brother-in-law has told us that we're little better than the Hampton Inn, where we sit around around wondering if he'll actually make it.
3) We'll have to make all plans provisional.
The guy is an idiot. If he weren't my brother-in-law, I would have written the guy off years ago.
