I treat most social media the same. If I happen to be logged in, I'll see it. But I don't necessarily seek out updates.
Facebook: friends and acquantances. People I like. As long as I never hated you, we can be facebook friends. I don't share much personal stuff, and I like to look at pics of people I don't see. I wold have no idea what is going on with high school people if I didn't have facebook, and would have lost touch with all of them. Same with my cousins and stuff.
Twitter: interests and news. I follow brands, people who like the same stuff I do, and industry related stuff. I follow a lot of people and have lots of followers
Pinterest: recipes, clothing. Stuff I like or stuff I want goes on Pinterst. No work related stuff here, it is all fun only.
Tumblr: stuff I am interested in
The things I have the hardest time with? Facebook ettiquette. If I meet someone out or at a party, I proably won't exchange numbers with you. Because I will likely forget who you were. We can be facebook friends though. I'll run into your updates eventually.
There is a big generation gap on facebook usage, and I am "old" and came to facebook "late." So I never know what to do in dealing with the 20 somethings who are way more addicted. Do I tag you? Do I message you? What happens if I like your post, what do you think it means?
I generally only share articles and observations on facebook, but I have one rule: is it OK if my mom sees this post? Would she be ok with it. And it is an important rule. My aunt who lives next to my parents is a facebook addict. Sure enough something I posted on FB will make its way to my parents, and they will ask me about it the next time we talk.
I like Facebook because I know how to use it well and it keeps me in contact with all the people I know. I do find how it's taking over everything kinda creepy though.
