Back in my hometown of Erie PA, where people are more alike, I used to visit with the clerks at the grocery store and was very friendly to people at retail places that I saw all the time. I would go through the checkout line of one man maybe 50-60 times a year. We made a point to visit every time if there was not a long line behind me. We were not going to be good friends but he was so friendly, it was a joy to see him and chat.
I asked him once how responsive the average customer was to his desire to chit chat with them. She said most of the regular customers were nice but when he worked in Boston and Philly most people would not give him the time of day. They acted like he was strange for making conversation in those towns, even if they saw him often.
Do you chat with regular FAMILAR checkers at the grocery store and do you think most people would be interested in this type of conversation in your hometown? I am particularily interested in analysis about how common this is based on what town a person lives in.

I chat with all the checkers at the store.
It's called being a polite, friendly person.
I will never be able to wrap my head around the idea that this is not a 'normal' thing for many people.
I chat with all sorts of strangers if they chat back. Just my nature. And, dogs with owners. And, little kids, too, if they want to say hi. If they want to be left alone, that's fine, too. I detest the grim, long faces. Ick. Downers.

I don't think it's abnormal or normal. Also as one person said it depends on where you live. It's normal in the south, in other places most people just want to go about their day.
Yes. I will talk to checkers and also to people in line. It has to be spontaneous and with NO ulterior motive.
The only exception I had to this was a "doorknob" of a single mom checker who, without fail, started the conversation and proceeded to talk about her kids EVERY time. I then avoided that checker's line.
I have a tendency to chat with everyone. Not in the sense of the airline passenger next to you who won't shut up........... just a few comments here and there.
