My friend will be alone at home for the holidays---bitter and angry and alone eating fruit cake and Chinese food, and a small Christmas tree with no ornaments.

I feel bad for him.

What should I do to help?

Why don't you invite him over?

Or, call and invite him to go with you to do something he enjoys. Maybe eat better Chinese food at a sit down restaurant? Sometimes if someone is really unhappy/lonely they can't dredge up the energy to go anywhere under their own power (such as driving over to your house). They talk themselves out of it. However, if someone else makes all the arrangements they are a little more likely to go along with them.

Why is he bitter and angry? That kind of explains why he is alone. Is there some reason you can't invite him to join you? Is this friend really yourself?

He's in his late 30s. He has been bitter for years. I tried telling him to come with me to go get Chinese food, he is too lazy to get up from his bed.

He wants me to deliver the Chinese food to his house in a couple of hours.

So, you're enabling him? He might be happier if he got up and got it himself.

Huh! He doesn’t sound like a very nice person, why are you enabling him? You didn’t say why he is bitter.

I have two close friends who lost their mates recently due to cancers. I have two other friends who both have Stage 4 lung cancer. Seems a big problem for this person, maybe for millions of people, is perspective. The two still living have never whined nor complained. They are grateful for each day they have.

I'm alone, 62, with dogs, and choose not to be bitter. But each story is different.

Yup, pretty much hit the nail on the head. The longer I live the more I realize this is so true. IMO your perspective and attitude constitute about 80% of your happiness, or lack thereof, in your life. I remember several studies over the years comparing happiness among different countries showing that some of the happiest people on Earth were from countries that were not even close to being the most economically prosperous. Then again some of the most unhappy people were from the most economically downtrodden countries so I know that actual life circumstances do play a role in happiness. Kind of hard to be happy when you're destitute but I still think the biggest contributor to happiness is how you approach life and your attitude.
