in my own family, my family members became "best buddies" with an ex who had done extreme damage to me and to my children. It is dysfunctional, it is dangerous, it is not normal. I cut myself off from contact with all of them. They also became best buddies with the ex's new wife. So my relatives are best buddies with the ex and the trophy wife, and want nothing to do with me. It is dysfunctional beyond measure, and as other posters have said, this is what alcoholics do and is a pattern of abuse.
