Normal, boring, guarded people have the most friends, why? (person, acquaintance)

Throughout my life I have enjoyed observing people and seeing who they were friends with. In general I have found that people who put me to sleep because they are so boring and average always have the most friends.
These are people who try so hard to look like everyone else. They are extremely guarded in everything they say. Never have an opinion about anything, so they don't have anyone that disagrees with them. They have all the safe hobbies and interests and never talk about interesting things. Their career and lifestyle is safe and predictable. They don't take risks or think outside the box. They speak in an even tone and never let loose and get overly excited.
Why are these type of people so popular and have so many friends?

While that has been your experience. personally, I do not believe that is true in general.
What you may be observing are people who have many acquaintances and not real friends.
Maybe because no one ever gets mad at them? People like agreeable people, not jerks.
No one likes a complete psycho or someone is is always disagreeing with you. But some of my best friends are people I disagree with on many topics and their differences make them interesting.

However, I noticed that the loud/funny/exciting people with strong opinions often times surprisingly don't have many friends. I guess they are too exhausting to be around too much. It gets old listening to stories after stories.

Agree, also some people don't seem to know the difference between a friend and acquaintance.

Nobody likes loudmouthed jerks, but I don't find "fence sitters" who have never have a POV or can discuss a topic too interesting.
