i post pretty regularly on this one local<edit> social media site and another regular poster invited me to an event. i have never met a person in real life who i met online. does this ever work out and people can become actual friends? or is meeting a real person different than an online persona?

It's different, but do it! Are you only looking for online friends or real life friends. Take a chance. You can find a way to worm out of it if doesn't go well.
I did it with a car club down in san diego. They all seemed nice - some a little quirky that i would probably never have hung out with otherwise. I do enjoy meeting new people though.
I met my husband through our grad school's intranet forum, 20 years ago. We've been married 18 years now.
One of my best friends I met online on an online support group. We have met face to face several times.
Living in a larger city, I am a member of several online boards and will meet up with people who have just moved here, or are looking for support. Like dhpeter said, I might not hang out with them otherwise, but it's good to meet up with them or to help.
I say try it! Met some cool folks thanks to Meetup.com!
Remember, people are people, wherever you meet them. Online is just one more place to meet people.
