Yes! I understood what you meant in this thread. That other thread really confused me for a while. I actually enjoy your posts and the wording about the signals, etc.
My husband bought me a "World's Loudest Whistle" and I use it on occasion to let him know I'm alive.
I'm serious, even though it sounds like I'm being silly or sarcastic. Sometimes I give a toot on that doggone loud whistle and he'll yell from upstairs, "Glad to know you're doing okay, Honey." And then I'll toot again. It's a really loud whistle. They weren't just whistling Dixie when they claimed it was the World's Loudest. Or maybe they were whistling Dixie. I don't know what the correct answer is.
I need to adopt this. Our house is too big and I often cannot find anyone when I get home. If we each had our own whistle tone, we could whistle out an inquiry and a replay very readily. Walking around yelling does not work, especially if the kids are home. They have trained their brain to hear nothing if I yell. .

As for signals when traveling I sometimes send picture postcards if I find ones I like. Email with brother occasionally, phone sister often because she is in bad shape in many ways, text with daughter often. Text with friends to set things up. No one needs to know where I am at all times.
I just sent out a signal to everyone I know since my whole area is burning. The whole county is on fire and it is all over the news, even in Germany.
So I sent texts and emails and called a few of my friends/family to tell them I am in the no burn zone (for now). I woke up with lots of texts already to ask for my well being so I sent an answer to everyone and more.
Much of my family communicates through facebook on a regular basis. Last year a neighbor died and wasn't discovered for 4 days. Since then I check in with one of my brothers once a day.

I can smell the smoke and my eyes water a bit ... far away in South Oxnard. Going to have some evacuated coworkers stay at my place for a while.
