There was a girl in my son's class whose name was "Jrew". Now "Drew" would be unusual already (is it usually short for Andrea?), but I think Jrew really takes the cake.
My name is MicHal pronounced McCall. It is a Biblical name or Saul's daughter, King David's first wife. It has plagued me all my life and continues to every time I go to a Dr. they always get it wrong, usually pronouncing Michael. In school each year fist day they would call out names and always say Michael, then when I came forward they would say no dear and look around for a boy.
Giving a child an unusual name does them a disservice.
What are some of the more unusual people's names you have encountered? (no "urban legends" please, only people you have actually known.) Did they hate having an odd name?
I knew a woman named Bambi, and she liked her name. I was once introduced to someone named Muffin (real name, not nickname) and I was so caught off-guard that a big laugh came out. I felt awful, but hey, YOU try saying "Nice to meet you, Muffin" with a straight face!
I knew a woman named 'Bambi', she was a stripper. I'm pretty sure that wasn't her real name.
I had a boss over 50 years ago named Dewey Beavers. I was only 17 at the time and pretty innocent, so it was a few years later before I realized how funny that was.
Don't know if it's still there but about fifteen years ago in Decorah, IA there was a Lynch Law Office!
Half a century ago when my children were being born most of us were naming our kids Adam, Jennifer, Sarah and Matthew and thought we'd come up with something unique for the age. But it turned into a real echo chamber a few years later playing in the park.
The poor, teensy preemie whose mom and I shared a room at the hospital was given the hearty and thunderous name of Thor. I could hardly stifle a giggle when they brought the wee little thing in for a feeding.
I know of two different chemical dependency counselors with the last names of Beers and Martini.
Dawn Early Light
Peter N. deWolfe
Dick Woodcock - a coworker of my Dad.
"Troy" sounds no more "masculine" to me than any other name. I don't get why people would have a problem with a name like "Kip" either. I hated my name as a child as it was, at that time, EXTREMELY unusual. Now, it's not exactly common but not uncommon either (and no I'm not going to state what that name is on this forum, I NEVER use my real name online for anything other than a financial transaction).
But I hated it as a kid and these days go by Pye.
