Toiletries for sure, the nicest you can get, something that is like a little luxury as far as soap, shampoo, etc. A guidebook, book on area history or anecdotes, and/or a current magazine or two featuring the area. A reading pillow.

For me, no flowers or scented anything in the room, as I can't tolerate artificial scents and I have very particular ideas about what I like and don't like. Just smelling like a room is fine. And check with your guests if you are leaving chocolates or other goodies. I can't eat those things and having things around I might desire but can't eat is a bummer.

My wool rugs can smell like wet cats...even if the cats aren't wet.

I would only want extra blankets, maybe pillows. Anything else is too much.

I have always set up my guest room like a hotel room. All the amenities you would get, adding in flowers is a perfect touch.

What makes me happiest is a television with a sleep function. If a guest room has that, it is the greatest ever.

A comfy bed with a bottom sheet, a top sheet and a blanket as well as two pillows is absolute perfection. A clock in the room is nice. A bedside table where there is an outlet nearby so I can charge my phone and/or computer is great.

Otherwise, I don't need flowers or toiletries or any sort of gift. If I'm staying in someone's home, they're either doing me a favor or I've come to visit them, specifically. If I'm not paying for the room, really, anything beyond a bed or a couch with a pillow is a bonus.
