I got involved in the message boards of an online magazine probably about 20 years ago. It was a close-knit group--there were marriages and close frienships springing from those interactions. I'm still in contact and social media friends with a lot of those people, many of whom I've never met in person.
Hmm, about 16 years as part of an international reptile husbandry group. Never met most of them in person or talked by phone. The original founding group existed long before the web. Started off with a member phone list and hard copy newsletters so some of us have known each other for almost 30 years.
Oh, take that back. Three of us have met in person. We met for the first time at LAX at the start of a month long trip to Madagascar to document rainforest and limestone karst chameleons.
I "met" an electronic pen pal on an aviary bird web group about 15 years ago. We kept the same bird species, have corresponded privately ever since, and have become very close. Never met in person and have never talked by phone.

2000 I joined a work forum for my industry. Never met anyone in person but I have about 4 people from around the world that I can depend on for any work emergency. Really great!
I have had two online acquaintances for about 10 years, but we've never been close. I've had more meaningful interactions with a few others for over parts of 6+ years, including someone who used to be active here.
