Hi - I was just wondering if the state of NC has a high unemployment rate? How does it compare between the metro areas (ie. Charlotte, Raliegh, Triad area, etc)?

Hi - I was just wondering if the state of NC has a high unemployment rate? How does it compare between the metro areas (ie. Charlotte, Raliegh, Triad area, etc)?
It would be very hard to get a true rate in NC now because of the high number of transplants that can not file with the nc unemployment dept, and that is where most of the calculations are derrived. Ive seen some blogs and articles saying it could be as much as 8% higher then what would be put out by the dept. Last year a large number of transplants moved here and live on equity and can not find decent jobs but they are not counted because they came from out of state.
When I was planning on moving to Raleigh last year, I did some research and I found Raleigh to have one of the lowest unemployment rate in the nation. It has one of the fastest growing economy in the nation as well. Charlotte has similar numbers. I don't know about other places in the state.

As of May the state umemployment rate was 4.8 % Charlotte's rate hovers in that range also.

This is exactly why I asked. We have been looking for jobs in NC (in NY now) and are really having a hard time. We are both professionals (DH - computers/me- health care), but it seems like those are the jobs you really have to fight for. We were thinking about living off the equity in our house, but that scares me WAY too much to do. We really just want to be near family, and we don't want to put ourselves in jeopardy to do that.
Thanks for the responses!
