OK, all- My husband, 2 kids and I are relocating to North Carolina as soon as our house sells. We've been doing some research and trying to pinpoin where it is we want to go.......We think we have it worked out.... BUT!!!
I have a Know-It-All sister who knows EVERYTHING about EVERYTHING. She has never been to NC, but I guess she knows it all anyway.
1) Are the schools (generally) good over there? Can anyone compare them to west coast schools in terms of academic levels? Is the criteria for 2nd grade the same in both coasts or is one way ahead of the other?
2) What is the Hispanic population in NC? According to the sister, there are more hispanics than any other. Please don't take that wrong--I am not racist.
3) Can anyone over there speak proper English? (whatever she meant by that, I'm sorry)
4) Are the accents really hard to understand? I know, I know, you don't have accents!!

Well, I moved to NC in 1998...from the West (Colorado, Montana, etc.)
1.) Most schools in NC are great! Depends on the town you live in though. Some are behind and some are ahead. Moore County schools are GREAT! Very advanced! Not sure how they compare to the West Coast, but compared to where I am from, they are above. Just make sure that you do your research. When you decide what town or city you will relocate to, check the district online or even call the school itself and just speak to the principal or something. Most people are very nice and understanding here.
2.)Depending on what part you relocate to, Hispanics are there. Some places MORE and some places NOT MANY! Like I said above, you have to research. Moore County has some, but not many. Sanford, NC. is nothing but that! Fayetteville..MANY! Hickory is more of a COUNTRY town...so not many. Carolina Beach and Kure Beach...not many. If you decide a town, just email me or leave me a message and I can try and answer as many questions as I can.
3.)MANY, MANY, MANY people speak proper english...LOL! Alot of people use slang terms or have accents, but not so bad that you can't understand. Some VERY OLDER, more "redneck" people may be a SMALL challenge, but 90% of people speak proper english. It isn't like the movies or stereotypes...LOL! Nothing compared to that!
I hope this helps and please feel free to message me if you have any more questions.
Schools in general are not as good as on the coasts or in the midwest. For example, we moved when my son was in 2nd grade from Minneapolis to Wilmington, NC. His 2nd grade in Wilmington was nothing more than a repeat of his 1st grade up in Minneapolis. Now Wilmington schools are nothing to write home about so that may have had something to do with it.

Can't comment on most of the state, but I know the schools in the Raleigh area (Wake, Johnston, etc) are pretty top notch for anything in this state. Wake county is noted as one of the best school systems in the country, but have recently dealt with tremendous growth. They are still a top-notch school system.

Southern dialects substantially originated from immigrants from the British Isles who moved to the South in the 17th and 18th centuries. The South was known for being largely settled by English from the South West - the West Country. (The West Country dialects of England also have similarities to the Southern dialects.) Settlement was also made by peoples from other parts of the British isles, particularly by Protestants from Ulster and Scotland.
So yes, we tend to speak proper English...probably more proper than the West Coast, LOL...it's just not the proper English used in the 21st Century. add the influence of Gullah and we have a REAL mix. Liz

These kind of comments make me laugh. First of all I usually have more and better formal education than the person making the statement and unless the person was trained at Eaton and Oxford then she probably doesn't speak "proper" English anyway.
You are making me feel better about my sister and I don't even know you guys!!! LOL
It's pretty obvious that she was wrong on all accounts and that is good to know. I feel like she was just trying to put down what I wanted to do with my life. (nothing new)
