Your son is 16 he is not of legal age to own a shotgun.
A 16 year old can have a shotgun, they just can't purchase one until the age of 18. People below the age of 18 shoot guns and go hunting all the time. I got my first shotgun at age 11.
Do you honestly think it is a good idea to let a 16 year old child drive a vehicle with a lethal weapon unsupervised across state lines?
i did it when i was that age. it is perfectly legal in North Carolina and South Carolina.
i suppose it is up to the OP to decide whether her kid is responsible enough to drive a car, or handle a shotgun. Obviously they need to be taught how to safely operate these things, but I think this can be safe for 16 year olds.

Absolutely nothing wrong with it considering ONLY age. Think about the things could be lethal in the wrong hands... like a CAR, but we let 16 year olds with no experience operate them all the time! A lot of 16 year olds around here have 6-8 years of experience handling rifles and shotguns by the time they are old enough to drive. My nephew just turned 10 a month ago and has had a .410 for over 2 years. He can choose a spot for a duck blind, set decoys, handle dogs and dress the birds at the end of the day! I trust him next to me with a gun, but I don't want him driving yet, lol...

I carried my Benelli shotgun fully loaded in the back seat of my car when I was 16. I guess I could have carried it on a bicycle but the trip from my house to the shooting range at Fort Bragg was about 7 miles.
I think a lot of people that don't have experience with firearms just assume that they are dangerous and incapabale of being handled by people under the age of 18 but that's just not the case. You would probably be shocked if you knew how many people have a firearm in their car at any given intersection in NC. I don't carry one now that I live in Wilmington but when I lived in Fayetteville a gun was like an American Express card. I never, ever left home without it.
This is what ticks me off about laws. It's your right to have a gun.
Keep it unloaded in the trunk. He wont know if it's in your trunk unless you tell him.
