Like I said in case anyone doesn't know, progressive means Liberal.
I suggested Davidson a nice little Liberal town with a nice little Liberal college and I'm headed that way. I don't live there yet but the quality of life looks nice to me. It may be a little pricier for NC but not what you would be used to in Mass.

Chapel Hill= slice of Massachusetts in NC
Chapel Hill/Carrboro/Durham are all very liberal and "progressive"....even by northeast standards.
Boone is a "hippie" type of college town in the mountains.
If you'e looking for something "progressive" (i.e., granola-eating, pacifist hippies), you could also consider Guilford College in Greensboro. It is a Quaker college with a very liberal culture, at least by southern standards.
With regards to some comments about Davidson, I've always considered it to be a college for wealthy prep-school kids - maybe they're limousine liberals.

Isn't Davidson near Charlotte?? I always think of the Charlotte area as pretty conservative....
Definitely Chapel Hill / Carboro. Orange County is probably the most liberal area in the state. Durham county is a close second, but I would hardly consider Durham a college town (even though Duke is there). I think Wilmington is a good mix, there are some definite liberal beach bums in that area. It's a little bigger than a college town, but UNC-W is there.
Also, can't forget Asheville. Small town in the mountains, UNC-A is there, very hippy and new-age friendly. Outside of certain areas you start running into some mountain folk though, but there is a very strong liberal new age culture there.

Why is that places such as NY, CT, CA, and many other liberal leaning states have so many people that want to move from them but still seek the same type of politics they are leaving?

I know it, weird isn't it? I'm headed to Davidson and I'm certainly not progressive but to each his own, I don't need to be with my own kind, I like diversity
