I work on Shaw AFB and am considering a position up at Pope. I've been told by one guy that worked on both bases that Fayetteville is just like a bigger Sumter (which is a dump). I've only been up there a few times (my wife is from Lumberton and on occasion, while visiting, we'd run to F-ville for shopping), which wasn't enough to get a good feel for the area. I don't want to make the move if the area is even more depressing than the one I'm currently in.

Are there any USAF (or civilian) folks here that have spent time in both areas and could give me a subjective opinion? Is one town better/worse than the other or are they about the same (despite size differences)?

I sure would appreciate the help.

Sorry you haven't gotten any replies to your post, I've lived in Fayetteville, but never been to Sumter. There are many posts here on Fayetteville, just use the search to find more info. While not a direct comparison, it may help you get a clearer picture of Fayetteville. Can you go up there and see for yourself, it might give you a better picture if you go thinking of moving there, you'll look at it differently than you may have in the past.
Good luck

I was at Pope and got transferred to Seymour Johnson in Goldsboro. I just retired and we are moving back to Fayetteville. I did not know how nice it was until I lived in Goldsboro. There is a lot more to do in Fayetteville and it is even more centrally located. BRAC would be the big reason to think about it. Is that job going to stay when the base is turned over to the Army?
