It would be better if you explained the point this is supposed to make?????
Why Raleigh (and Cary's) city limits are extremely jagged, have holes, have islands, etc. I have no point to make because I don't understand why some parts are completely seperated or the random holes.

I wouldn't go as far as making it that simple. Charlotte might be a little more conservative, but I would say Wake County/Raleigh leans slightly Republican, where as Durham and Chapel Hill lean strongly Democratic.
Bear in mind, after Durham and Orange, Wake was the third strongest No-voting county against Amendment 1 by a decent margin.
Otherwise Wake County has voted almost identically to Mecklenburg in recent elections. Based on the double-digit margin which Obama won both counties though, it looks like they may be transitioning into permanently blue counties, but we'd need to see how they perform when the democrat loses nationwide. They're clearly not democratic enough to keep midterm elections from being close.
There is a difference in the level of political involvement in the two counties that's kind of interesting. As the state capital, Raleigh is more politicized. Mecklenburg usually has some of the lowest turnout in elections while Wake usually has some of the highest.
