First I am hearing about this. Not sure I agree with giving illegals driver licenses. ID's yes not licenses. I've already been hit by two illegals without insurance or license. Will this help the issue?

I didn't realize that illegals could get a license until I read about the pink stripe. How does that even work?

I know this is a very controversial subject and expect this thread to end up locked sooner rather than later, but they are not really *illegals*. I mean they are, but they are not illegals up for deportation. They are people who were brought here illegally by their parents as children and are now being allowed to stay under a strict set of conditions and apply for a work permit. NC is also allowing them to get driver's license and the pink stripe is intended to alert authorities to who they are and the fact that they have a valid license does not make them a citizen .
That said, yes I personally think it's a good idea. They will also have to have insurance just like anyone else who gets a license and at least they will know how to drive in NC (hopefully reduce the number of wrecks by unlicensed, uninsured drivers!)
Plus it will be easier for authorities to keep track of them since they will have an address and contact information on file.

It is a brand new program that would begin March 25. It only applies to people brought in as children, not all illegals. Here's the key paragraph: "The office of the state's Democratic attorney general in an opinion last month said that under federal law, DACA participants have a "legal presence," even if they do not have "lawful status." Therefore, state law requires that DACA participants be granted licenses. Republican Gov. Pat McCrory's administration agreed, announcing last week the DMV would begin issuing the licenses."

Of course, it is still controversial, and we will have to see how it actually works.

Reading the commenters on that article ( on the yahoo page comments section) makes me hang my head in shame, that there is that many idoits in this world still.

And why do they need to be kept track off ??...they're not terrorists.

I'm glad to see they can get work visa now and get a license to be a productive LEGAL member of society. Not sure why it is focusing on the latino community , like only mexicans come to america for work and escape a crappy country....

I don't understand why it's so hard to immigrate in the first place...you should just be able to move here, file some paperwork, and pay your taxes. You get granted immediate citizenship with conditions. Don't violate conditions (i.e. get arrested, and maintaining permanent residence in the US, etc. ) for a year or something like that, and you are a permanent citizen.....why is it so hard? Does it matter if you came on a boat, raft, plane, or on foot? Not to me it doesn't...

Because it's a state issue, not a Triangle issue.

Yeah, stantheman78, it's just that the subject you raised really has nothing particularly to do with the Triangle area specifically, since, as lovebrentwood said, it's really a North Carolina statewide policy issue, not a local one. It would probably get stronger and more meaningful response—as well as adhering more closely to the Terms of Service—if it were in the North Carolina forum. Or, also, there is a "Politics and Other Controversies" forum where you'd get an even broader discussion, albeit more general. And there's even an "Illegal Immigration" sub-forum within the politics one, in case you want to really in-depth and hardcore about the subject.

Anyhow, for my part, I don't really care. I was just curious how this thread wound up here.
