That's assuming that it is illegal to teach such a class now for all religions. I can see an issue with the establishment clause if it's illegal now and the goal is to make only one legal in the future. That would be problematic.

But if it's not illegal now then why have the bill.
It's illegal or they wouldn't be passing a bill. They wouldn't need a bill. I remember when the Supreme Court ruling came down. People who were torqued took their kids out of public schools over this. A lot more religions are practiced in this country now than then. It's not just Budddists, & Shintos, & Muslims, etc. that this will run afoul of. Catholics use a different bible. Jews don't do the New Testament. This will be in court. This is not religions of the world, it's bible study. It's establishing a state religion.

The founding fathers said that there would be no state religion. This is because the Anglican church was the state religion & all non Anglicans were classified as dissenters & had lesser rights as colonial citizens. The vast majority of my colonial ancestors were dissenters.

Well I guess no one at NCGA checks with lawyers. If it is illegal now this bill won't make it more legal.

OTOH they are opening their own can of worms when it comes to just the issues of which translation to use. Remember, only the King James is authorized though ironically that's Anglican too.

3 of 4 of my grandparents were not born Catholic. They grew up with the King James bible, as did my mother. Catholics use one with an imprimatur. The jerk who thought this up says you can use any version, so he knows that Catholics don't use the King James bible. Score one for him. However, how's that going to work in practice?

This is to be available for grades 9 - 12. This brings religion into the day to day conversation, condoned by the public schools, at an age when kids don't want to be different. It could fly without incident in city & suburban schools, but this would be a disaster once you leave those areas.

Hey, two clowns wrote Amendment One without consulting a lawyer. That went well, didn't it? Apparently, in my opinion, these folks aren't concerned with laws, except their own. Primary & secondary schools receiving federal money must be neutral concerning religion. What are they going to do now? Turn down federal money & use NC funding only? They know this is illegal, they're just looking for a dog whistle for when the Supreme Court makes a ruling that makes Amendment One illegal.

There are still some Republican voters who actually believe that about their party.

This was settled in the 50's. If they pass it, the ink from McCrory's rubber stamp won't be dried before it's in court. This is a great way to waste money. . .but yet, we don't have money top pay the federally mandated unemployment.
I am beyond fed up with listening to the rhetoric from these GOP clowns. I understand the angst and trepidation with Dems (Obama as the centerpiece of it) for your average conservative - I may not agree with it, but I get it and somewhat understand where it comes from. But, they play on this fear of the bogeyman and use it to push their real agenda - which has NOTHING to do with really helping the state or country as a whole. They shouldn't be spending any time in session on social conservative issues... yet, they do... when it comes to fiscal, it's take money from the poor and give themselves raises.

Repealing decades of progress on equality, ignoring the cornerstone of this country with separating church from state, freedom... real freedom... they're not interested in it. They're only interested in what they believe and do not care one lick about anything else. Even in the face of being in the MINORITY. It is very clear in their actions - they are not there to serve the majority and just a bunch of 2 faced punks who need to get a taste of the reality for your average American. It's a travesty that these guys get to pretend they're "true patriots"... They get to call themselves that, but they act more like old school plantation owners telling everyone what they should do, should not do, and what they should believe. The craziest part is that their hardcore followers will call everyone else sheep and tell them to wake up... all while they get played for the fools they are... amazing.

In the end... you have to tip your hat to them. We let them get away with it.

Sometimes I really can't stand living here. Unemployment is 9.5% (we're #5, yay!), and the education budget has been gutted, but THIS is what they want to focus on?
