Are those horseflies? I mean the flies that are the size of a mouse. I have never seen anything like those, not even in FL where the bugs are prehistoric.

One flew in my apartment and landed in my coffee filters. It was quite a scene removing it and involved a broom, plates, salad bowls, and a large plastic bag. It's now living on my terrace.

If you are talking about flies about the size of the top of your thumb, then yes is is probably a horsefly. They can bite and their bites itch!

Are they horseflies or those flies that sort of look like dragon flies? I've been seeing a bunch of those lately.
Horseflies are MEAN and they bite! my husband had a knot on his leg the size of a tennis ball from a horsefly bite!

They look like mutant killer black flies - with a white belly - bugs rarely make me scream but that thing flew at me.

Flies the size of mice. This is one of those 'limit growth' threads.

I have seen a horsefly or two. They do not seem to chase a person down in the way wasps do so no bite as yet. Lucky for me because I am hyper-sensitive to bites/stings.

Like the horsefly, but it was much bigger than that one. It was the size of my thumb!!! I've seen the big dragonflies too.

Hmmm. seriously cannot think of anything like the horsefly but bigger. I'd probably scream too. Was it a cicada? here's a link to a pic:

CICADA!

Except I could swear it had the head of a fly.

I think if I had let it remain in my apartment, it would have turned into Jeff Goldblum.

Hey, I like Jeff Goldblum!

Aha, here it is - mystery solved - Thanks!:
