I found this forum while looking for some perspective from people who have relocated to NC from other places in the country, specifically New England. A lot of the information has been great, but I have to say, I'm pretty disappointed to read some of the posts from natives of NC in regards to people from the north east. Now, don't get me wrong, one of the big reasons I'm considering a move from Boston is because of the people, so I can relate to most of what has been said. A lot of Bostonians are loud, rude, obnoxious, etc. No argument from me. However, I just want to put in my 2 cents and say "I'm not like that!". Just like everyone from the south isn't ignorant or a hick, not everyone from Massachusetts is a Mass-hole. There really are nice people up here, it just takes a while to weed us out from the jerks!
So if you hear a Boston accent, one that isn't really loud, please give them the benefit of the doubt. Note: this does not apply to those loud, rude, obnoxious New Yorkers!
I have to respond to say that I believe that what you say is true. It is wrong (and hurtful) to each of us to be stereotyped or judged by where we came from, our ethnicity, etc. Most of us want to just live where it feels right, raise our families, and live a decent life, with as little struggle and strife. Take care.

I really agree, and sure hope if you read my previous postings you could see I was saying that too Personally, I love the Boston accent! After all, Boston Rob (don't groan!) was my favorite "Survivor".
Boston Rob was one of my favorites too. Although, it's disappointing how those reality shows seem to use the Boston stereotype to pick their contestants. Anyone ever seen beauty and the geek??? Tim Wakefield is awwwsommme.... I cringed everytime I saw that guy.

Okay, I was starting to like your post until I got to the last sentence. You are doing exactly what you don't want the southerners doing to you....JUDGING you from where you come from!! Not all NYers are loud, rude and obnoxiuos...period. So if you hear a NY accent, please give them the benefit of the doubt, and this applies to anybody no matter where you are from.

Swb03, most of us don't believe all youse guys are obnoxious, rude and mouthy.
Yes... there are some cantankerous ol' fuddy duddies down here who can't accept change and believe the sterotype, but they're the exception not the rule. There are also alot of Southerners who simply pick alot (I'm one of them) and are misunderstood.
Most of us adore your accent (been to MA myself and couldn't get enough of it.). I live in a small city in NC and most of the children here talk like little Yankees now (my kids included). The kids are picking it up in school from all the transplants -- and the parents are encouraging it. They don't want their kids labled as 'hicks' (like they were) just because they have a Southern accent.
There's a mint julep welcom wagon, and I missed it???!!!
LOL. I think some of dear misguided yankee friends come down expecting Paula Deen to greet them with mint julips, magnolia leis and bisquits & gravy (the sterotypes work both ways). Then they get here and are disappointed that they didn't get the warm reception they had hoped for.
Not sure if the sour grapes poster was one of them... but I have an inkling he is.
