no surprise here.

RALEIGH (AP) — State officials are advising an undisclosed number of residents near Duke Energy coal ash dumps not to drink or cook with water from their wells after tests showed contamination with toxic heavy metals, according to letters obtained by The Associated Press on Tuesday.

A law passed after last year's spill into the Dan River required the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources to sample wells within 1,000 feet of Duke's 32 coal ash dumps across the state. Officials at the state agency have refused to disclose how many families are affected statewide.

"In all, those tests conducted by DENR showed contamination of 87 private drinking water wells for households located near eight Duke plants across the state, the AP reported. The DENR tests only looked for contaminants found in coal ash — things like mercury, manganese, arsenic, and vanadium — and found of elevated levels of various chemicals depending on the location.
Duke Energy, however, is denying that any of the contamination is a result of leaky coal ash ponds. In a statement to ThinkProgress, Duke spokesperson Erin Culbert said each well had an absence of boron and sulfates, which she said are “key indicators of groundwater potentially impacted by coal ash, because they migrate more quickly than other trace elements.”

How will the governor defend his old employer this time?

Based on what you posted, I don't know why he would get involved. What is he supposed to do? Maybe you could explain further.

Seems the contamination is much worse than expected. Many decades of lax regulation, long before McCrory got into government , has allowed these sites to become so polluted. Duke & Progress had plenty of friends in Raleigh it seems.
