I had a friend who recently moved to Oregon from NC and she got a notice in the mail from the NC DMV telling her that she had to ship her old license plate back to NC because it was state property, lol.

Is that ridiculous or what? I've lived in quite a few different states and I have never had to ship a plate back to a former state.

This is really weird.

MD is the same way. You have to turn in your tags when you get rid of a car and don't put them on a new one or move out of state.

One of my cars got totaled and the front plate disappeared from the scene along with the bumper. It took me two years to straighten that out even when I turned in the rear one.

Seems ridiculous. It also seems like something that would never be followed up on if you just didn't respond.

You have to return your plates to NJ too.

I always thought it was unusual that North Carolina lets you keep your old driver's licenses. I have collected five of them over the years.

Don't return your MA plate and you still have to pay the excise tax on your car.

They never asked for mine back when I moved out of state a few years ago, and didn't say anything when I moved back and applied for new ones.

I recently renewed mine and they tool the old one.

Maybe your local office is NOT following the rules.

Many states will give you a "refund" for months not used for that year.

I find that odd too...I have several that are all still valid, with different addresses on them I have collected as I moved around the sate. DMV has never asked for on old one back.
