Sales tax is the most regressive tax. Less well paid citizens spend a larger percentage of their income for needs than higher paid citizens. Better to leave income tax as is was and not starting expanding sales taxes.

Graduated income tax can be fairer by taxing higher earners at a different marginal rates.

This exactly. Wake, Durham, and Meck are all heavily-Blue counties. The GOP Leg has already pissed them off, so no incentive not to do it more while being able to tell the folks back home they've "helped" them, even if redistribution of wealth is immediately called "Socialist" when a Democrat suggests it.

At a state level that's not smart. High income earners leave or purchase primary residences in other states. Increasingly raising the state income tax is a bad idea. IMO.

No surprise here. They're just trying to redistribute more wealth to the people who vote for them (the poorer, more rural counties). Good luck on them getting voted out with the cleverly drawn voting districts we have.

I'm scratching my head here, trying to think of a time when LIberals have proposed laws that ban free speech, or freedom of religion. (some) Conservatives actually have come out in favor of legislating religion, but I haven't seen it with libs.

I think you are confusing people's right to free speech with constitutional limits to free speech.

You and I both have the right to say (almost) anything we want, even if it's against the spirit of the constitution, of even if it goes against one another. That is not the same as enacting laws on those thoughts or words. (Ex: Walmart not selling, or SC choosing not to fly confederate flags is not the same as outlawing confederate flags. People trying to outlaw Islam or prevent Mosque's from going up is ignorant and misguided, but they are free to spout such things, even if those beliefs interfere with mine. They are not allowed to use laws to actually prevent it. Individuals can pray privately in school, but they can't use the government institution to lead organized prayer in school. I could go on and on, but it's CLEARLY a waste of time.)

Intellectual dishonesty. Tell us how you equate sales tax revenue with "wealth" ........and also tell us how "wealth distribution" via transfer payments from the middle class and the rich to the poor are the same thing as transferring sales tax from one municipality to another?

I've yet to find a liberal who can manage to pull off these mental gymnastics with ease. Maybe you'll be the one.

Since you're having trouble finding a liberal who can do it, here's a conservative to do it for you:

"Senate Majority Leader Harry Brown, a Jacksonville Republican...described the proposal as reforming an antiquated system that has rural residents subsidizing wealthy counties."

“For years, a disproportionate share of tax revenue has been redistributed to urban, prosperous areas of the state...he said."

When they came up with this tax system, many on these pages warned of the issues and problems that a flat tax create.

The system has created a need for the lowest earners to give money to the wealthiest so their Real Estate taxes would not look like those of NJ. Now with the redistribution of sales taxes from one county to another, another problem comes up. How are counties which rely on sales taxes to fund themselves going to make up those lost revenues?
The new tax system failed (1929) before when the tax system was a flat system. The progressive system worked better. A minority of tax payers claim that they paid to much while gaining the most from the system. Now the people with the lowest incomes need to support the wealthiest.
Rural counties have different tax rates on large land owners who claim that they are farmers or ranchers, maybe the Leg. needs to end those.

How 'bout when they were floating the idea of using the Fairness Doctrine against conservative talk radio hosts?
