We have been predicting this for a few months, and yes it's confirmed. Wegman's is finally coming to North Carolina!
Wegmans Food Markets, an 88-store company that is ranked one of the top supermarket chains in the country, is looking to open its first North Carolina store in Cary across the street from Cary Towne Center.
The family-owned company, headquartered in Rochester, N.Y., has its eye on a potential 90-acre development north of the mall on land owned by Columbia Development Group LLC, a Columbia, S.C.-based shopping center developer.
“We have signed a letter of intent and are working through lease negotiations with Columbia Development Group, with hopes of reaching a final lease agreement sometime during the first quarter of 2016,” Wegmans spokeswoman Jo Natale said Monday in an email.
Columbia Development Group has submitted preliminary plans to the Town of Cary that include thousands of square feet of retail, restaurant and office space, plus some residential, structured parking and potentially a 130-room hotel. The company bought the land from the state last year for $21.15 million.
My brother who does commute work in a new store in Richmond VA was raving about it.
I was surprised on your post mention only 88 stores as I figure it was a bigger chain (Harris Teeter has 230). Must be like Ikea of grocery stores.
With seven stores in Virginia currently, hopefully, this opening in Cary a sign more stores coming to NC and a distribution center.
Currently, the closest Wegman distribution center is in Pennsylvania, but I could see them logistically opening one in Petersburg.
Hopefully, they use local companies for the daily staples as that almost a day of food sitting in a truck.
I'm glad to hopefully slow this Publix invasion. I think Publix are meh and would choose Harris Teeter or Food Lion for produce,
As we predicted here, Wegman's move into the DC and NoVA market was just the initial step toward expanding toward NC. Once they moved into Richmond, the writing was on the wall. Now, the question is where do they go from the Triangle? Will they go halfway to Winston-Salem or Greensboro, or leapfrog down to Charlotte?
I find Wegman's entry into North Carolina questionable. I am glad it is entering the state. The drawbacks I see are its store count at 88 stores and its extensive footprint from New York to Virginia.
I have never been in one, but they are consistently rated #1 (or very near the top) in survey after survey. If you are #1, are you overrated?
Both Wegman's and Publix have ranked first or second in various supermarket and pharmacy surveys for customer service.
