Francois provided a link to the C-D profile on Elm City with its income and demographic statistics. If you are on a 5-acre farm outside of a tiny town of 1300, you really do not have to worry about crime. Most locals will have their own protection anyway, since the sheriff would take a long time to get there in event of a break-in. I notice the profile did not include crime stats, so I suggest looking it up on Spotcrime.com . I put in the address of that house, and there are a couple of thefts and a burglary in the past 90 days, nothing violent: http://spotcrime.com/#5226%20Lake%20...20City%2C%20NC

The school ratings at Greatschools.org are average. They are 4,5 or 6 out of 10, which is really pretty good for a ENC rural area. If the ratings were 1,2 or 3, I would suggest looking elsewhere.

Wilson is a small, aging city with a few businesses and a college. I have friends living there. It has a nice library and historical center. There is a country club neighborhood where the more affluent people live. It is not a place that attracts transplants, but more the home of old families.

Rocky Mount to the north has a bad reputation, but there are a few attractive neighborhoods. Nashville is supposed to be a decent place to live.

Generally speaking, Eastern North Carolina does not have the growth rate that other parts of the state have. Raleigh and the Triangle have all the high-tech businesses and the exploding growth. Eastern NC still is dependent on agriculture, the military and a few local businesses to drive its economy. For example, Mount Olive is famous for the pickle cannery and many other towns raise hogs and poultry. Goldsboro is the home of the Air Force base.
