I recently moved into a house w/a basement. It's the first time I've ever had a basement. One of the best things to me is the easy access to plumbing and HVAC systems. If something goes wrong, or you want to replace/improve them, it's all right there as opposed to being in a cramped crawlspace or insulation covered attic space.

mdp mentioned the heating/cooling benefits. They are real; being halfway in the ground really prevents the space from getting too warm or too cool.

The biggest negative: radon gas can build up. This is especially a problem in the mountains and foothills of our state. There are tests and ventilation systems available.
