This ^

I've been to a Durham Bulls game about 2 dozen times and a Mudcats game like once. I barely even remember the Mudcats existence unless someone else brings it up.

In regards to soccer, football or baseball, fan support has to come from far beyond the Charlotte region to make it feasible for Charlotte to have those teams. Without the surrounding populations of the Columbia area and the Triad, Charlotte could never support those teams because it doesn't have a centralized metro area of 4 million like an area like Atlanta to draw on. Charlotte has a small metro population for a city its size. NBA is a little different because there are less spectators at games than the NFL, MLB and MLS. Bank of America Stadium has over 75,000 seats. A Major League Baseball Stadium typically seats North of 40,000 and there are many home games which is why Charlotte would have some difficulty supporting Major League Baseball. The Spectrum Arena has 18,000 seats, big difference. Plus the Hornets was Charlotte's first major league sports team and the city wanted to put its name out there that they are a major league city.

Pro sports fandom isn’t strong enough to support hundred dollar tickets but shallow enough to depend on not offending hometowns 70 miles away. That’s not how it works. It might serve some psychological benefit, but nothing much more. The Marlins are still the Marlins, the Patriots didn’t surpass the Celtics in popularity until Brady despite the New England in their name.

True but I can give you another example when Greensboro last has an ECHL team it was called the Greensboro Monarchs. But when Greensboro landed an AHL franchise which is suppose to attract fans from around the region and beyond, the name changed to the Carolina Monarchs. You are right that it is psychological and has nothing to do with that data. But believe it or not it makes a difference. If people view it as a "Greensboro" team, they may not drive 50 miles to see a hockey game. Where the team is based is irrelevant. Its psychological like you said. Its probably the reason the Hurricanes are not called the Raleigh Hurricanes. Hockey is not as popular in the south as it is up north so the Carolina name was nothing more than a marketing strategy to draw a bigger fan base.

That's not how that works......Pittsburgh, Kansas City, Cincinatti, Cleveland, St. Louis, Indianapolis(football), Milwaukee, etc.... for baseball and football teams...

Gotta figure that the Charlotte metro is just hovering over 2 million people. For Major League Baseball that's considered a small market team. Many of those areas are also more urbanized and have a high population density except for a few of those cities. Its the reason why Los Angeles has two NBA teams or Chicago has two Major League Baseball teams. In North Carolina population is more spread out which is typically for southern cities/metros except for places like Atlanta or Miami.

It certainly could be called Carolina. But it need not. It’s fan base really won’t give a flying fig.

South Carolina is just as good, if not arguably better, than NC. I see way more SC stuff in the north than NC stuff. They don't know how lame Myrtle is up in Jersey and such. Myrtle is so popular for them. (The OBX decals seems to be from former NCers). Also.... Charleston. It's a great state, not sure why some of you guys are just so disdained by them. (FYI. People are very dismissive of NC as a bunch of hillbillies. Watch people from VA, especially NoVa, have their headspin if you dare mention backwater, hillybilly NC being associated with them. Even though, I think, they're a little more rural and honky tonk than NC if you exclude a few DC suburbs)

And I don't think the use of "Carolina" is a way to represent both Carolina's as much as it just rolls off the tongue better. "In my mind, I'm going to North Carolina" ?

North Carolina Panthers?
North Carolina Hurricanes?
North Carolina Cobras?
North Carolina Mudcats?

Carolina Hornets, or North Carolina Hornets? If the Charlotte Hornets were named after the state. Carolina is just so smooth.
Well in NYC, if you say you're from North Carolina you here oohs and ahhs, because the well-travelled living in or visiting NY know that it's one of the nicest states and they hold it in high regard.

Just a reminder, people in LA and NYC don't disparage any other cities. They give them respect as probably having something special and good in their own right.

If the people in NoVa are dismissing NC, then they are either all from smaller places in the Southern States and are proud to be living in D.C. which is a world city... or there's a slight bit of jealousy about the mass migration to the Southern states.

Be proud and a little arrogant about being from NC, they'll indirectly respect the state at least.

The people dissing other cities just are immature and have inferiority complexes. It's cool to be respectful of everyone's home region.
