Somehow didn't see any threads about this? In just a few weeks, the Tryon International Equestrian Center will be hosting this year's largest sporting event in America for two weeks, and will bring an expected 400,000+ people to the Tryon area over its duration. Glad to see WNC getting such a big opportunity to showcase all it has to offer to the rest of the world.
When the FEI World Equestrian Games™ were held at the KY Horse Park outside Lexington, in 2010, it was the first time they'd ever been held outside of Europe. To have them come back to the US so soon is a huge coup. This is a VERY... BIG... DEAL.
The numbers are deceiving. They tout 500,000 attendees, but that's a sum of daily attendance for the entire event. If one person attends for the entire thirteen days, they're counted thirteen times towards the total. But "half a million people" has a nice ring to it.

Good points, didn't know/realize all that. Still, it's rare to get such a major event in the middle of almost nowhere like this, and I hope the towns of Columbus, Mill Spring, Saluda, Tryon, and others are able to make the most of it. I had heard of this equestrian center a couple of times before, knew it was new and all but it's definitely a much bigger deal than I originally thought.
Hotels are booked for miles all around Tryon. We would have put our Spartanburg house on AirBnB or something but we’re in the middle of a major remodel and it won’t be ready in time.
It looks like there is still a lot of construction to be completed in one month. Last I heard, the only on-site hotel was still nothing but steel framework.
We drove to the Equestrian Center to check out one of the restaurants there and was surprised at how unfinished it appears. Unpaved roads etc. Are there issues that have resulted in a slow down of its progress? We didn’t stop as there wasn’t very many people there around 4:30 this afternoon.
