NCDOT has done a lot of work on the NCRR corridor. Any state that takes an active role in passenger rail service shows a commitment to making improvements.
"Through track and signal improvements, the NCDOT has reduced the travel time between Raleigh and Charlotte by more than 35 minutes since the work began in 2001. In addition to reducing the travel time, the work will increase efficiency and reliability for both freight and passenger trains in the corridor."
Multiple daily trips are in the works, but how far away that is I don't know. The NCDOT Rail Division website has a lot of information about track and station improvements and future high speed and expanded rail service.
I've spoken to a few people who have children at universities in the triangle area that will pick them up in Charlotte after they take the train from Raleigh. Haven't heard complaints and they say it sure beats having to drive all the way to Raleigh.
