I currently reside in New Jersey with my wife and two children, ages 4 and 11. I am looking for a nice, quite small town in the western area of NC near the mountains. Great schools, and a low crime rate are most important to me. I am a police officer (lieutenant) in the NJ NY metro area, and will be retiring very soon. I am in my late 40’s, and hope to continue working in some type of law enforcement position. It is also important to my family to have a Roman Catholic Church in the area. Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Wow, moving to a small town in NC after being a police officer in your area will be quite a change!
You can get some school information at www.ncreportcard.org.
My husband grew up in Statesville which is at the intersection of I40 and I77. Larger town that is becoming a suburb of Charlotte quickly.
We like Hendersonville just south of Ashville.
Good luck!

Definitely check out Brevard and its county (Transylvania). Beautiful spot and I believe the schools are good. Here is info on the Catholic Church

Default Potential NJ trnasplant as well

I am in your boat. I am looking to move from central NJ to NC within the next 3.5 years. These posts are a lifesaver! I am looking in WNC but as you stated, schools must be excellent as that is what I am leaving (because the taxes certainly aren't!) I have a 10 yr old. I am planning a trip next month to check out the area. Good luck on your search for your little piece of paradise!

Default I love my County in NC

I simply love my area of NC. I am in Rutherford County. We are centrally located between Asheville, Charlotte and Spartanburg. I moved here from a large city in Florida to escape the crime and live the simple rural life. I have found it here. I see a huge difference in the schools as well. In Florida, it seemed there were total mayhem where they keep the children under better control here. Not to say there are no bad things as there are bad influcences everwhere. But when my 12 year son visits Florida, the folks down there tell me he is so much better behaved etc, than the kids down there.
There is a charter school here that just expanded to include the elementary levels. They even teach critical and judgment skills. Wow, now if the public school could grasp the importance of those, it would be great.
Though Baptist is the majority, there is a mix of Methodist churches as well as one Catholic church here.
If you would like more information on the area, just let me know and I will be more than happy to send you some information and or links.
I think you would be presently surprised.

Have to agree... Brevard is really nice and so is the area. "Land of the Waterfalls."
