Hello everybody,

This may sound more like a dream than an actual plan ... but maybe you have some advice for us ..
My wife and I ( 25 and 21 ) are planning to move within the next year. I am a medically retired veteran that spend most of his life overseas and she is a german/turkish girl that I brought over here. Neither of us have seen much of the U.S. but we are sick and tired of the Mid-West. I am originally from Illinois and we are currently living in St.Louis,MIssouri and cant wait to get out of this crime and drug infested city.
The ideal place would be fairly close (up to 1 hour drive) to the beach, affordable houses ( up to 100.000 ) and colleges and universities nearby.
Were not planning on having kids but we do want to buy a small house with my VA loan instead of "wasting" money on rent ...

Sorry no one got back to you. Don't know where in the mid-west you are b ut from what i"ve heard you will probably find house prices to be much higher here. That said, if you want closeness to beach AND college you have only two choices. Wilmington or Greenville. Greenville is not real close but within an hour or so.

You could also look at Elizabeth City. You'll certainly find some homes in or near your price range there and outside of town, and you're only 45 minutes to Kitty Hawk and the Outer Banks. Elizabeth City State University is a smaller state school located there, however its offerings would be less than at East Carolina or UNC-Wilmington.

Not sure on house prices ... you might have to look in the suburbs of any of the suggested cities. Outside NC, but close, you might also want to look at Charleston, SC or Norfolk/Virginia Beach, VA.
They would both also have colleges and beach.

I'd go with Wilmington. University town, and there is an Air Force Recreation area (Fort Fisher)south of town that is really nice. Beachs north and south too. Commissary and Mil Med not far at Ft. Bragg or Camp Leguene
