Hey everyone. My boyfriend and I are moving to North Carolina, and need your help! We know what we want in a place to live, but it is a matter of finding it. We have some ideas from research, but it will be easier talking to actual people.
This is what we're looking for:
Driving Distance to Beach (Max 30 minutes)
Area that does not get major damage from hurricanes
Malls/Stores within ten minute distance, if not less
Area that is growing and starting to boom and build up, if it has not already
Cost of Houses (100K-200K)
Contracting/Plumbing Jobs available in area or driving distance
If any of you have any input, please let us know! Our current lease is up in a month and we will have no where to live. We want to move down there ASAP! Thanks in advance for all your help!!
There is no way to determine if an area will or will not get hurricane damage.
Raleigh has gotten major hurricane damage and it is 120 miles from the coast.
Same thing with Charlotte. It's a possibility no matter where you live in NC ---even the mountains have gotten bad winds/floods from hurricanes.
Sounds like you should look at Morehead City or Wilmington areas from what you describe.
You can't live anywhere within 30 minutes of the beach in NC and not have a very good chance at some point of hurricane damage. I lived in Wilmington for five years and had to evacuate 5 times (we lived in Carolina Beach, actually). Your price range on homes will be difficult in the Wilmington area too, so keep that in mind.

You can't live 30 mintues from the coast and not risk hurricannes. For that price range you aren't looking at much of a house on the coast.....especially any near an area with a mall.
You might want to rethink what you are asking to just a few things.....you are going to have to compromise on something.
Hm, okay. We're a young couple looking to get out of NJ to move to an area that can better suit our needs. We live in a high tax bracket around 6500 a year in taxes. Houses are going for about $300,000-$500,000 for a ranch. Is there any place around that is nice, has stores down the street, that is affordable and has a lot of work for contractors/plumbers?
No matter what, I know I will go through major culture shock, as I have not lived anywhere but NJ. It will help to be near malls or beaches, something I am at least familiar with...at least that is what i'm telling myself
If you want to live near the beach (within even 100 miles) and live in a place with all the modern amenities and a growing economy, you really need to look at the Wilmington area. Just try to live in a suburb that's more inland (less hurricane damage, less expensive).
You may also want to consider Charleston, South Carolina. Same deal except amazingly beautiful.
Peaches, Raleigh NC isn't AWFULLY far from the beach, has a good amount of people from the NE like you, we have good malls (two main ones and lots of other 'big box' centers), and at the rate the area is growing in some parts, there would be plenty of work in the contracting/plumbing field. If you have any questions I'll try to help. Beware though, occasionally a hurricane CAN still come through but that is encountered all over the state, nearly.
Isn't Wilmington area surrounded by water? Or do you mean try looking elsewhere more inland? I will checkout Charleston. Sounds like that might be a good idea as well!
