Hello everyone,

My fiance and I are moving to Durham, North Carolina from Florida. I would really appreciate it if someone could tell me what type of vehicle would be best suited for driving in North Carolina, we are thinking of getting a truck with 4-wheel drive as well as a hybrid vehicle. Thank you for your time to those who read and respond.

You really don't need a 4wd vehicle in Durham. Share the hybrid.

imo I wouldn't say it would matter. If you're planning on driving in the mountains a lot. ie taking weekend drives and seeing the snow, I'd get something appropriate for that. Around the triangle area there's quite a lot of smaller roads with parallel parking in the downtown areas. I would have something that you can manuever well.

Thank you for your responses so far. I would be going to the mountains on weekends often to go hiking with my fiance and our two boxers. What else do you advise?

No need for 4wd. I drove my little suzuki esteem all over asheville for a visit no problem. Save yourself the gas money. You will do more stop and go around town and on I40. Definitely pick something for great mileage.

i would recommend something good on gas mileage unless you are going to be trying to haul stuff around like trailers, boats, etc

Unless you are planning on doing some serious off-roading, you may not need a large 4 wheel drive truck. With gas prices hovering between $2.99 (on a good day) and $3.39+, perhaps a vehicle that is more economical on gas but still offers the space you need for your dogs and gear might be a better solution. Seems like you are open to this suggestion given that you mention buying a hybrid.

My husband drives a late model Ford Explorer for work - he's in construction so sometimes his work does require the larger vehicle. But he filled up on gas yesterday and hit $60 for the tank. If his company didn't reimburse him for his gas, that kind of money would do serious damage to our budget.
