I'm not sure if this thread is still active, but I'll add my 2 cents. I live and own a business in downtown St Pauls and have been here for approximately 9 years. In that time, I've seen things change dramatically. The downtown has lost their anchor stores which has created a lot of empty and deteriorating storefronts. (Just like every other small town). The town seems to want to try and survive on places to eat (everyone and their brother seems to think they are going to get rich opening a restaurant for some reason) and Medical Supply Companies along with Home Health Care operations. There are probably 1 of these businesses for every 3 residents. While I'm exaggerating, it's a real problem for a town to survive on places to eat and medical operations. This town will not. The economy here was already horrible before the big bust, and now it's impossible. The county itself is one of the 10 poorest in the US according to the US government, and I can attest to that fact. The populace also hasn't placed a great deal of emphasis on education. I am planning to close up shop and move to the Western part of the state (Hendersonville or surrounds) and hope to do better in a wealthier area. St. Pauls used to be a little Norman Rockwell town. No more. Thumping boom cars everywhere, no political will to do much of anything about anything for fear of offending someone, and a downtown that floods every time it rains. Good luck if you are planning to move here.
