Another thing is the amount of people who have guns that shouldn't. It's too easy to pick up a gun and shoot out of anger. Now, I don't think people should never have a gun but I do wish people would be self aware enough to realize maybe they shouldn't own one.

As far as casual sex/moving in together because of pregnancy: TOTALLY agree. I do not believe that a baby should force a marriage or a relationship. On the same token, just like guns, I do wish people would be more responsible when this issue arises (pregnancy). I will not advocate any option but people should be prepared to be a parent when they have a child. But that doesn't mean they should be a husband or wife as well.

As for finances? Again, totally agree. Our parents (my husband and mine) always drop hints that we aren't "successful" enough because we don't have many things they think we should. *shrug* We are happy, our kids are taken care of and we are a very close family. That's what matters to us.

I knew I would regret reading this thread, and it did not take long. A FEMINIST IS ANY PERSON WHO BELIEVES IN THE EQUAL RIGHTS OF WOMEN AND is WILLING TOwards that goal!
As a feminist the worst thing that happened to the American family was/is the need or dependence on a dual income family. Take a long at any of the 100's of studies done over the past 35 years, teen pregnancy, drug use, delinquency, all on the rise...one common factor, more as children in my day were called "latchkey kids". The most dangerous times for children/adolescents are the hours between 3-6 pm.

NO I WILL NOT GO DIGGING AROUND THE INTERNET FOR SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS. THIS IS A MESSAGE BOARD AND IF ANYONE WANTS THAT TIME OF INFORMATION TO SUPPORT WHAT IS COMMON KNOWLEGE: DO IT YOU DAMN SELF! Have a nice day.

What exactly are you trying to communicate here? That children suffer when both parents work? I think I am misunderstanding you, because that is how I interpreted your statement.

Thanks for taking the time to answer. I know what a feminist is and I know the movement isn't to blame for societal ills. Where exactly did I say feminism was anything but working towards the rights of women? Part of believing true freedom and equal rights is rejecting the idea that only the traditional model of family is the healthiest/most productive.

What exactly are you disagreeing with in my post?

Hope you have a wonderful day sista!!

Well, I can say that the kids are better off when there is a parent at home....I still don't understand how people, unless its a total last resort, can put infants in daycare centers for 9 hours a day....basically only seeing them for a few hours a night between dinner and bedtime....I know a lot of people who think its a necessity to put babies in daycare and keep working full time, and its not really out of financial necessity, as they do it to maintain a higher standard of living (new house, higher priced cars, expensive vacations)....this society seems to push that 2 parents MUST work full time, and looks down on stay-at-home parents.....

I put my infant son in daycare at 6 weeks old because I was a single mother and I had no one else to watch him. Sometimes people really don't have a choice. (I know what you are saying GP, but it chaps my ass when parents who use daycare are roundly criticized.)

Understandably, a single parent is an instance where daycare is a necessity...my beef is with 2 parent families who can feasibly not put a child in daycare, but do so to afford more material things....

I don't totally disagree with this, but that's an issue of poor child care choices, not one of having two working parents.

There seems to be this belief that people must only work if they need the money. What about women and men who enjoy their careers? It is entirely possible for two people to work and raise a successful family. The trick is to have proper child care in place.

Wouldn't they enjoy the career of being a parent? If the mother or father doesn't enjoying the career of being a stay at home parent, more than the career choice outside the home, maybe they picked the wrong career?

Although I understand in some instances child care is necessary at an early age, it should be an exception, not the rule.

Even if a family can afford a Goddard or Montessori school, it still isn't a better alternative than a parent at home, at least in first 3 or 4 years of life.

I will agree that until the child is at least of school age, it is better to have a parent home if that is possible.

I too stayed at home with both of my children until Kindergarten, and sent them to pre-schools three times weekly for socialization purposes and school readiness,

I treasure those years and they remember far more than one might expect! I am glad that I was there for their first words, first steps and all the other wonderful firsts!
