I am relocating to the Hill section of Scranton in a month and am looking for any tips or recommendations on banks, dry cleaners, tailors and other service providers. For my move from Los Angeles, I am considering using ABF. I am also looking for recommendations for shopping appliances, rugs, furniture, lamps, etc. I prefer Thrift Stores, vintage shops, auctions and buying used or other good values. This is going to be a big change, but I am excited about the adventure ahead! Any guidance would be appreciated.

I moved out of the region six years ago to outside LA (the reverse of your move hahah). I can't remember specifics, unfortunately. But I can assure you that there are plenty of thrift stores, vintage shops, and auctions in the area. I know of this one Persian rug place off of Main Ave in Scranton. In a lot of the rural areas, you'll find Antique shops. A lot of mom and pop shops. I know of a few dry cleaner places in the Clarks Summit area (where I grew up) such as Summit Cleaners.

The most important things that you should bring are: umbrella (a lot of rainy days), a snow shovel, a lot of warm clothes (heavy jackets, snow pants, etc.), a natural light lamp (to combat the excessive dreariness), a coffee maker (again, the Seattle-like climate and bitter cold weather), and a good security system (although the Hill section has improved in terms of crime). Good luck!

On topic would be more helpful then general Scranton sucks comments.

I provided the OP with some places. I can't remember specifics, it's been awhile. I'm assuring the OP that yes he/she shouldn't have too much of a problem finding those places. Another post on here confirmed that the Persian rug place burned down, but he/she deleted that post. There's nothing wrong with giving advice for the climatic conditions of this area. It's more tongue in cheek, but I emphasized mostly on the OP's main concerns.
