My 2 cents.. buy in Pocono, the cars are CHEAPER here... and you can negotiate for a great deal.... buy a 4WD (not even AWD) or you will be VERY SORRY in the winter.... unless you want to stay home every time it snow heavy for 4 months.... =)

Subaru is a great car, but I drive a 4WD SUV... I look like a little girl driving a huge thing... =) during the blizzard, I nearly stuck in the little icy ramp, but was able to get out after a while (with the 4WD)... it is a worthy investment.

Be sure to look at Subarus. The have some nice sporty models. All are AWD but can deliver decent mileage and are well rated for safety. The local dealer is very good. Convenience and service are important. Compare with other nearby dealers to be sure the price is fair. Don't drive a long way to save a few dollars. You may want to look for a nice used car (may be tough to find Subaru since owners tend to keep them) with only on street parking.

Also, depending on exactly where you live, park, drive etc. as well as when you must or want to drive, consider buying 4 snow tires pre-mounted on wheels. If you decide to do this, purchase them before the first winter here...say early/mid December) make easy swap on/off at optimum times (approx. mid-late December and mid-late March) . Of course tires must be stored somewhere in off season which can be a problem in some living situations.

Some will advise AWD, 4WD, and/or snows aren't required. They will be right some time for some people. It depends... This winter was easy in NEPA, but LI and CT got buried. Next year it could go the other way. You must decide based on your personal criterea. For more info on this general topic, there are many discussions of AWD-4WD-FWD and winter tires on C-D auto, geos, (and other) fora. Use the search feature with keywords like AWD 4WD snow tires etc.

Buy the vehicle in NEPA so you can avoid the outrageous taxes and registration fees in California. I've lived in both NEPA and Los Angeles.
