The Sterling should be converted into a museum, preferably a Children's Museum or as Margritte mentioned a coal mining and Children's museum, that houses a river conservatory information center. Makes sense, no?

That however, won't happen, and it is a sad commentary on the priorities of the area. Residents may whine, the county is broke, but truth be told, they could do it, if it was a priority of the residents. But, that isn't what the area wants, even though every metropolitan area the size of the Wyoming Valley or larger in PA have either science centers or children's museums.

Here, it's all about sports and hunting for kids, those are the priorities. Academics and cultural activities are not even blips on the radar.

Tear it down, and enjoy the new parking lot.

If I recall, it had a problem with mold and mildew... back in the 1970s. Did they ever remedy that problem?

I like the river conservatory info center too. Easton has something similar at the Crayola Factory site. Upstairs from the Crayola facility is a museum dedicated to the canal and towpath systems of the country. They also run a boat ride on the canal near the center. It's actually really interesting and educational. Wilkes-Barre could definitely do something like this. If people would support it. Which won't happen.

Here is another link to photos of the inside of the hotel:

Click on each thumbnail towards the bottom of that page. The architecture is really breathtaking.

Ok, I can see many people are upset on here anyway about the dire plans for the sterling hotel-whatever the usage will be-apartments, lofts, retail, offices, or a museum, etc. We still need to save this building. I know how uncaring people in the valley are, and then they complain after the fact-but YOU care and YOU are people of this region, we should ban together to preserve this structure it is our heritage and it is what defines our city.

Well that was the part of the flood damage, water got into the walls-when the politicians took over the 3 and 4th floors they fixed it.

Although if it was a high school football museum with an attached bar, it would be packed!

There's a reason they haven't been able to find a private developer, because it's not worth it financially and I'm sure the corruption of the region probably played a role as well. You already have Genetti's which would be in direct competition with this venture, they'll both be bankrupt. There is so many reasons why this won't work there is too many to name.
Yes but the 100 million also includes building a multi story high rise for a conference/office center-that will be probably costing 75 million alone-with cost of steel now.
