Ok now that everyone is happy just let Summering put in two more cents........LOL
Ok true story here, one of these believe it or not, but......I swear this is true.
I had a good friend, he wanted to ride a dangerous vehicle........I tried to persuade not!
As I stood by my kitchen window one day, I looked one block over and saw some newspapers blowing in the wind, at the newspaper boys home driveway........lifting up.......all the right side edges. I was wondering why this caught my eye.........
It came to me ( a phrase I don't really believe in, but non the less) " all we are when we die, is a newspaper blowing in the wind"..........( we are more for sure)
I shook my head........it was like what I was thinking I didn't want to believe.
The newspaper was delivered. I went straight to the obituaries............and.........
Just what I thought would be there, WAS..........the name of my friend who I tried to get not to go on that. So, I have personal reasons why I don't like dangerous things.

On the other hand......Summering has a badly scared up knee from becoming ONE with a bike, twisting and turning down a hill together.........I still love bikes. Buy new ones for the kids all the time. Most in the family ride bikes constantly. I love them........
Summering also, got bruised from ankle to hip.......totallly purple......on skiis. I still believe in skiing. Fantastic sport that one of my girls too took like a pro......
I still promote soccer ( you can break a bone or two, but.........you'll make it ok) I still support the baseball teams........yep, you can get a big, shiner but, you'll make it ok too.
Summering also dives off boats in coves with snakes going by........even though the little fellow got bit by one just last year. We'll be headed that way again soon.
Most in our family swim all year long, at the Y or at the Clubhouses......or pools.
All the kids have skateboards and ramps even!!! But, to add all sports into the fray is not what I was talking of at all........
So no.......I am not promoting sitting at home with videos. Or stopping all sports or all fun. In fact.........I am a person who loves outdoor fun.
You can break your arm, your leg, or bust your nose..........but I don't want to see someone in worse shape then that...........that is just me. I try to take less chances....
Remember they worked to make Nascars safer, I think they can make the ATVs safer too.
So no, our kids are not sitting home idol......they are busy and having fun.......
Smiles

i am involved a bit in this project and thank you, weluvpa, you are right. there is some land adjacent that is set up for conservation, but we are working with them to possibly expand the recreational offerings by incorporating walking, jogging, hiking, camping, rv's, etc. this study is important because it will lay the groundwork for future recreation at this site and surrounding area. it is being done by looking at the land responsibly. also, i believe it will help somewhat with the safety issues, since rules must be followed to use the facility and areas will be designated by difficulty. just wondering what anyone's thoughts were on what i think is an exciting development for our area.

I think its great. This is a great project for our area and in my opinion will be a win win for all that are involved, this is something that I am willing to get behind and if I can help in anyway just ask.

Once again I agree with Dan. (Good Lord this is a frightening trend!) LOL! I'm 100% behind such a project, and I wish you and your associates, Vince, the best of luck in getting this launched. I have a lot of "pull" when it comes to online social networking (MySpace, FaceBook, etc.), so let me know if I can be of any help to "spread the word" on there as well for some free advertising for you.

Sounds like a great idea. There definitely needs to be more "legal" places to ride ATV's. Some of the more remote townships near me permit ATV's on the roads, but it's more for practical purposes than recreation. With all the open space we have out here, you would be very surprised how difficult it is to find a place to ride, unless you buy your own tract of acreage.

For those that mentioned having to deal with ATV's riding on roads near their houses...don't the state police, or I imagine you guys have local police do anything about it? Up here, the state police are very vigilant about people riding ATV's on roads, even dirt roads way off the beaten path. For us, it's really only a nuisance during hunting season and to a lesser extent in summer, pretty much only when there are a lot of yellow license plates in the area or other "weekend rednecks" are visiting.

ATV's can be safe, but I think with younger people you have to make sure you instill them with a strong sense of respect for the machines and how to operate them properly & responsibly. I don't have a precise statistic, but as an avid reader of the police reports (ours can be great comedy), the overwhelming majority of the serious injuries & fatalities seem to occur among our seasonal visitors who aren't as experienced with or as respectful of what ATV's can do to the rider (or private property).

I m getting ready to list my house with 20 acres in the Dallas area (after we add a 3 car garage this spring). We have motor cycles and quads galore here, including ourselves. It would be a awesome place for a park!

Well...

Having helped with races and other things at NAW/Metor's Motorcycle club. I can say quad people are just like everyone else they just wanna have fun! They spend lot's of money and help the local economy. Look at the fact Quads aren't going away any time soon! They will, and do need to get quieter exhaust systems. The the manufacturers are working on that, but that doesn't stop "Johnny" form modifying his to make it more powerful and louder. They are all for the most part 4 strokes and don't smoke like the good ole 2 strokes.

Quad people come in 2 varities: The one's who load up the mega dollar tow rig that costs more then your Lexus and head out paying lot's o money in fuel costs to ride with family and visit many nice places! And the "Locals" who ride around the area. Both are looking to have fun and good time just as you heading out shopping or to the fav watering hole.

There are still the weekend warriors who ride just to make the most noise and show off! I have seen many instances where quads were the baby sitter! Parents buy them to get the kids out of the way so they can do as they please and not be bothered by the kids being under foot.

I agree we need a place to ride. The quad riders would love to have a place yet the local governing guys seem to dismiss this need. Paragon is closed and not relocating to NAW as far as I know! Will NAW do something to allow riding on their land I guess we have to wait and see! They have talked about it!

It has been tried at many places: Plymouth Flats, NAW, Earth Consevancy's IP road/Nanticoke area. As a member of North Eastern Pa Mountain Biking Association (NEPMTBA) and the Back Mountain Enduro Riders (BMER) I'm glad to help in any I can. We are working on things and we feel as everyone does give quads a place to ride. It is time and it is needed in our area!

Here's websites if anyone is interested in helping or learning about the quad industry and all it's workings!

I am all for this park ... ATV riders need a place ... so give it to them ... I don't like them on the streets ... not that this is a huge problem in my neighborhood ... but occassionally they are out there and the noise drives me crazy.

All for the park and I think the overnight camping aspect of it will attract people to the area ... that's what we need to help boost the local economy!

Hopefully you'll have better luck with this than we have here in SoCal!

We haven't totally given up yet, but the biggest hurdle we've run into is the liability for such ventures. The other issue was NIMBYism. Problem solved when we finally figured out that the local Indian Reservations with a casinos had plenty of backcountry available and would be interested!

Best of luck! I'll be following your progress.
